3-Day Isle of Skye Tours from Edinburgh

Three days covers Trotternish — the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing, Kilt Rock — plus Portree and the Fairy Pools, with time to walk rather than photograph from a layby. More importantly it gives you three rolls of the weather dice instead of one, and on Skye that is the difference between seeing the Cuillin and seeing cloud. It is not enough for Elgol, Loch Coruisk or a full day on one mountain.

You can, and it is mostly driving. Skye is roughly five hours from Edinburgh, so a day trip is around ten hours in a seat before you stop anywhere. You will see the island rather than spend time on it. Worth noting: the biggest-selling one-day Skye products depart from Inverness, not Edinburgh, and pair the island with Eilean Donan Castle — a far more sensible day out if you are already up north.

The Edinburgh tours also take in Glencoe, Loch Ness and the Glenfinnan Viaduct on the drives north and south, which is part of what you are paying for rather than dead transfer time.

Portree, the main town, is the postcard harbour. But this is genuinely contested by people who know the island: the Sleat peninsula, Elgol and the view into Loch Coruisk all have their advocates, and none of those fits comfortably into three days.

Skye makes its own cloud, and the Cuillin can be entirely hidden for a full day regardless of the forecast in Portree. Bring waterproofs whatever the season, expect at least one grey stretch, and treat any clear hour as the one to spend outdoors. No operator can promise you a view, and none of the honest ones do.
